What happens if you leave it untreated
If this is left untreated, your gums begin to recede, forming pockets between the gum and tooth and exposing the vulnerable tooth rot. Once plaque builds up on these pockets and beneath the gum line, it is much harder to remove. This stage of periodontal disease can be managed through more extensive treatment but is irreversible. It may also destroy the bone which provides support to your teeth, leading them to becoming loose and eventually falling out.
What happens if you have a severe case of gum disease?
In severe cases of gum disease, surgical intervention may be advised. Dr Fahd Saleh is a Consultant Periodontal Surgeon responsible for periodontics at Alvington House Dental. In cases of an advanced periodontal condition, he will clinically assess your teeth and gum and discuss with you the best course of action to help stabilise the pockets, possibly with surgical intervention.
Where is periodontal surgery conducted?
Periodontal surgery is conducted at Alvignton House Dental Practise using local anaesthetic. It may involve gum grafts, regenerative procedures, dental crown lengthening, pocket reduction, periodontal plastic surgery and sinus lifts.
